USB Cord/Wire Connections - Inside The USB Wire Color Coding

USB wire and its color code

Many electronic devices these days use USB cable which will be connected to the CPU of a computer system.

This is a USB driven device or anyone can say that thing as USB wire or sometimes USB cord.

What is USB and its Technology

The invention of USB technology paved the way to greater heights of moving, copying and executing computer files.

Since USB cable is used on daily basis of most workers today, It is good to know what is inside the USB wiring.

USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. If we try to cut and slice through the USB cable itself and expose the wires, we can see four different colors of wires. This USB cord has its own USB color code.
The USB color codes in all USB wiring are almost the same.

We can see a sample of USB cable color code shown in the photo on this hub. USB wire and its color code depend also on what manufacturer it is made from which indicates what kind of wire colors a particular USB cable wires has.

Color Codes of USB Wires Inside

If you can see the red wire inside of your USB cable, then be sure it is the positive wire. It has 5 volts in DC.
If another color you see is black, that is the opposite of red wire which will be coded as the negative wire or the ground wire.

The rest of the wires are the data wires. In the photo shown here, the set of wires and their codes are solely intended for this set of colors only. So the green and white wires of this USB cable take the data wires where green is the negative data wire with white wire as the positive data wire.

However, some USB color coded wires may be interchanged from their coding because of the various companies who made it.

One example of USB cable here or my USB mouse wire color code is also shown in my USB photo.

On this photo, I took a picture of my spare USB cable at home since I cut it to find a remedy on how I can manage to repair my own stuff like my media player charger. I find the photo very helpful to you, guys out there.

I added few more photos of USB wires to give the full idea about USB cable/wire/cord.

USB Wires: orange, blue, white and green

You can see the orange, green, white and blue wires of the USB. The positive wire in this set is the orange wire.

Negative wire takes the white colored wire. Green is the data wire which is positive and data wire in negative is the blue wire.

Common USB's have only four wires. All you need to do is to find the positive wire or the live wire to power your particular electronic device.

Data wires in USB are the pathways of the signals from CPU to determine certain functions.

The Hazard of USB Voltage

May it be mouse, keyboard, webcam, USB charger, USB powered cooling fan or any USB electronic device, always look for the positive 5 volts wire and its negative counterpart to avoid hazard.

I know there are many techies who will ask if how dangerous a USB is. The five volts pressure was developed as an Industry Standard in mid-1990's to facilitate good use of the USB Technology.

Though, 5 volts DC is not harmful enough, it can cause slight damage to an electronic device.
